Throw Away the To-Do List in 2018!
To do or not to do, that is the question!
The "To-Do List" is a tedious list of things you have to get through to get to the next "To-Do". To-Do lists are important because they break down the very basic tasks we need to accomplish to get to our goal. But, they can be boring and you can easily lose motivation to give yourself those check-marks or gold stars.
This year, start a "To-Be" list!
A To-Be list is more a more powerful list than a To-Do List, because it connect's with your deepest desires. It blows past your excuses to motivate you to move towards your ideal self.
Who do you want to become in 2018?
In your wildest dreams, who would you like to be?
Maybe you can't become a Tour de France winner or top Concert Pianist. Those boats may have sailed when your parent's didn't enrol you with the top coaches at the age of 3.
But, you can become happier, healthier, wealthier, more resilient, the best in your field, the best mom, the best uncle, the Queen of your Condo, Empress of your Career, King of Dish Duty and on and on!
Identify what is most important to you at the most basic level. What do you want to feel by the end of 2018? Who do you want to become by the end of 2018? Find a pen and paper and write it down!
Do you want to feel more empowered? More of yourself? More honest? Stronger? Head-turning? Do you want to light up every room you enter? Become an expert?
Once you have these To-Be goals, you can work backwards to make your To-Do list!
Every time you write an item on your to To Be list, write a To-Do beside it that will get you closer to the future you. Identify 3-5 items that will move you quickly toward your To-Be goal.
To Be: Wealthy in friends and family
To Do:
1. Reach out to 3 old friends to re-connect
2. Meet one new person a week
3. Offer to help a friend or family member with any one thing they choose
If you prefer to keep your To-Do list, write down your To-Be goal beside each item to remind you why you are doing these things and how they will move you forward. For example:
To DO ------------ To BE
Buying organic eggs ----------- To-be a nutrition queen
Cleaning the floor ---------- To-be a homemaking maven
Submitting your 10 page essay on time --------- To-be a finisher
Reading 3 journal articles by the end of the week --------- To-become an expert
Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day ---------- To-be a well oiled machine
Going to the gym 3 times a week --------- To-be playing tennis matches at 90
Taking time for mindfulness meditation --------- To-be a zen master
Write out my to-be goals --------- To be self-aware and sucessful
What if you don't know where you want to be in a year from now? Answer anyways.
Answer as if you did know where you wanted to be. Unless we exercise our creative minds, our creativity gets stomped down by past experiences or by people telling us about what is or isn't possible. Silence the pesky inner critic and dream of 2019.
What if you don't make a to-be list? Where will you be a year from now? In the same place as today? Is that really where you want to be? Or do you have aspirations and dreams for your personal growth?
